Timelines

Your Timelines are your window onto the fediverse. They contain a list of posts, and replies, from various servers. When you first login to Firefish you are presented with your home timeline, but there are several other timelines available 1.

Clicking Home 2 will always return you to your Home timeline. Clicking any timeline heading at 1 will take you to the top of that timeline.

Unlike many social services, there are no algorithms. This means that the content you see is in chronological date order, with the most current posts at the top.

The Home timeline is the first one you see. It is a combination of:

  • Your own posts
  • Posts from everyone you follow
  • Any replies to your own posts
  • Any post that you or your followers have shared

Your Home timeline can have some content adjustments based on your own configuration setting.

The next timeline at 1 is the Local timeline. It is populated by:

  • Public posts from anyone on the same server as you
  • Posts shared by anyone on your server
  • Unlisted posts from anyone on your server. See visibility for details of Unlisted

Next we have the Social Timeline, which is simply a combination of content from the above two (Home and Local).

The Global timeline displays posts from all across the fediverse. This is NOT every post everywhere, but any Public post from anywhere, that someone else on your own server follows. Example: If Joe is on your server, but you do not follow them, the Global timeline will show all the posts they are seeing from anywhere on the fediverse.

info Your server admin may choose to hide Local and/or Global.

An additional Recommended timeline may be enabled by your server administrator. This shows timelines from specific servers they choose – perhaps with a common theme.

Looking at the Local timeline will give you a good idea of the type of content from users on your server. You can interact with these posts as normal, and follow people.

The Global timeline gives a far wider reach. Again you can interact and follow.
